Telluride sits at the end of a box canyon in the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado — a dead-end valley with a Victorian mining town at its floor and 4,425 acres of terrain climbing the walls above it. The mountain rises so steeply from the town that you can ski directly to Main Street. The canyon walls frame every run, every view, every photograph. It is one of the most dramatically situated ski resorts on earth, and one of the most fiercely protected — no chain hotels, no sprawl, just the original town and the mountain above it.

Telluride's terrain is as serious as its setting. Plunge, Spiral Stairs, The Plunge — double-black runs that drop straight off the ridge into the canyon below. But there are also wide open groomed cruisers on the Prospect Bowl side, and the free gondola connecting the mountain to the town is one of the great ski resort experiences anywhere.
