The resort that invented winter tourism. The place where it all began.

St. Moritz sits at 1,856 metres in the Upper Engadin valley of Graubünden, Switzerland — a high Alpine lake basin ringed by the peaks of the Bernina range, the highest in the Eastern Alps. The town looks out over the frozen Lake St. Moritz and the broad white expanse of the Engadin valley, the Piz Nair and Corviglia rising to the north, the Piz Bernina — at 4,049 metres the highest peak in the Eastern Alps — visible to the south on clear days. The light here is extraordinary: St. Moritz claims 322 days of sunshine per year, and the high-altitude Engadin light has a clarity and brilliance that painters and photographers have been drawn to for over a century.

St. Moritz hosted the Winter Olympics twice — in 1928 and again in 1948 — and has been the home of the Cresta Run, the world's oldest and most famous toboggan track, since 1884. It was here, in the 1860s, that hotelier Johannes Badrutt made a bet with his English summer guests that they would enjoy the Alps in winter — and won. That wager effectively invented winter tourism as we know it. Every ski resort in the world owes something to St. Moritz.

This print captures St. Moritz at its most timeless — the town above the frozen lake, the Engadin valley stretching to the horizon, the Bernina peaks rising to the south in the brilliant high-altitude light, the slopes of Corviglia above. Elegant, luminous, and unmistakably Swiss.
