1,140 inches. In a single season. The world record for snowfall still stands.

Mount Baker Ski Area sits in the North Cascades of Washington State, in the shadow of the 10,781-foot stratovolcano that gives it its name. In the winter of 1998–99, Baker recorded 1,140 inches of snowfall — 95 feet — setting the world record for seasonal snowfall at a weather station that still stands today. This is not a resort that markets itself on groomed cruisers or aprés ski. Baker is a mountain for people who come for one reason: snow.

The ski area is small by Colorado standards but ferocious in character — steep, heavily forested, with the kind of deep, dense Cascade snowpack that buries the trees to their crowns. The Hemispheres and the Chute are runs that have defined Pacific Northwest extreme skiing for decades. And above it all, the perfect volcanic cone of Mount Baker itself rises into the clouds, a constant presence on the horizon.

This print captures Baker at its most elemental — a skier buried to the waist in Cascade powder between snow-laden old-growth trees, the volcanic summit of Mount Baker rising above the clouds behind. Bold, cinematic, and unmistakably Pacific Northwest.
