The resort that refuses to close. Tignes sits at 2,100 metres in the Tarentaise Valley, its lifts climbing to the Grand Motte glacier at 3,456 metres — one of the highest skiable points in the Alps. Together with Val d’Isère it forms the Espace Killy (as it used to be known), 300 kilometres of piste across 10,000 hectares of terrain, named after the triple Olympic gold medallist who grew up in the shadow of these mountains. Now it is simply known by the conjoined twine of Val d'Isere & Tignes ski areas.  With two glaciers guaranteeing snow from October through June and 90% of the terrain above 2,000 metres, Tignes is where serious skiers come when everywhere else has given up. Below the dam in the valley, Lac du Chevril covers the original village of Tignes, flooded in 1952 when the Barrage de Tignes was built. The mountains remember.
