The lake that invented la dolce vita. Bellagio. Varenna. The villas that have seduced the world for two thousand years.

Lake Como sits in the foothills of the Alps in Lombardy, northern Italy — a deep, glacially carved Y-shaped lake whose waters reflect the mountains above and the sky below in equal measure. At 410 metres deep it is one of the deepest lakes in Europe, its cold clear water fed by Alpine snowmelt and coloured a deep blue-green that shifts with the light and the season. The Rhaetian Alps rise steeply from the northern shores, their peaks snow-capped for much of the year. To the south, the lake opens toward Milan and the Po Valley, the light softening into the warm haze of the Italian lowlands.

Bellagio sits at the tip of the promontory where the two southern arms of the lake divide — a position so perfect that it has been called the Pearl of the Lake since Roman times. Pliny the Younger had two villas on these shores. The grand villa gardens — Villa Carlotta, Villa del Balbianello, Villa Melzi — have been drawing artists, writers, and aristocrats for centuries. Varenna, on the eastern shore, climbs its steep hillside in a tangle of coloured houses, its waterfront promenade barely wide enough for two people to pass.

This print captures Lake Como at its most timeless — the view from Bellagio across the lake to the Alps, the villa gardens in full bloom, the water a deep luminous blue, the mountains rising behind in the golden light of a summer afternoon. Effortless, beautiful, and unmistakably Italian.
