The snow is the reason. The Wasatch Range sits in a unique meteorological position — Pacific storms pick up moisture crossing the Great Salt Lake, then rise rapidly into the mountains and dump it as the lightest, driest powder on earth. "Greatest Snow on Earth" is a registered trademark of the State of Utah, and Alta is where that snow falls deepest. In a big year, the canyon buries itself. The Baldy Chutes, Supreme, High Rustler — runs that have defined serious American skiing for generations, skied by people who came for the snow and never left.
