Schladming sits in the Enns valley in the Styrian Alps of central Austria, its medieval town centre — market square, Gothic parish church, painted facades — unchanged in character for centuries. The Planai rises directly above the town to 1,894 metres, its slopes dropping steeply to the valley floor in a vertical drop that has made the Planai one of the great World Cup downhill and slalom venues in Alpine skiing. Three further mountains — Hochwurzen, Reiteralm, and Hauser Kaibling — complete the Ski Amadé connection, giving Schladming access to one of the largest ski areas in Austria.

The 2013 Alpine Ski World Championships brought Schladming to the world's attention in a way that few events have matched. The night slalom on the Planai — 100,000 spectators lining the course with torches, the mountain ablaze with light, Marcel Hirscher racing on home snow — was one of the great spectacles in the history of Alpine skiing. The image of the torchlit Planai against the dark Austrian sky became the defining photograph of a generation of ski racing.

This print captures Schladming at its most iconic — the medieval town in the Enns valley below, the Planai rising steeply above, the Dachstein glacier visible on the horizon to the west, the Styrian Alps stretching in every direction under a deep winter sky.
