Mammoth Mountain rises from the Eastern Sierra Nevada above the town of Mammoth Lakes, California, a shield volcano built from ancient lava flows that created the broad, open summit plateau that defines the mountain's character. At over 11,000 feet, Mammoth sits high enough to catch Sierra Nevada snowstorms in full force — the same storms that dump on Lake Tahoe keep going east and hit Mammoth with everything they have left. In a big snow year, Mammoth buries itself. The season regularly runs into June, sometimes July, occasionally August. No other resort in the continental United States skis this late.
The terrain is as big as the season. The summit ridge is exposed, windswept, and genuinely alpine — wide open bowls and chutes dropping in every direction. Below the treeline, the mountain opens into long, sweeping groomed runs through the Eastern Sierra forest. And on a clear day, the view from the top stretches across the Owens Valley to the White Mountains on the Nevada border.
