Ischgl sits in the Paznaun valley in the Tyrol region of Austria, its ski area — the Silvretta Arena — straddling the Austrian-Swiss border at altitudes between 1,400 and 2,872 metres. The terrain is high, snow-sure, and extensive: 239 kilometres of marked runs connecting Ischgl on the Austrian side with Samnaun in Switzerland, the duty-free shopping village that has been drawing skiers across the border since the lift connection opened. The skiing is serious, the altitude guarantees snow from November to May, and the views from the upper lifts across the Silvretta massif are among the finest in the Eastern Alps.

The Top of the Mountain concerts — held at the Idalp plateau at 2,320 metres at the start and end of each season — have brought Elton John, Rihanna, Kylie Minogue, and dozens of other global artists to perform on a stage above the clouds, with the Silvretta peaks as a backdrop and tens of thousands of skiers as the audience. The season-opening and season-closing concerts have made Ischgl the most famous après-ski destination in the Alps, a resort where the mountain and the party are equally serious propositions.
