Annecy sits at the northern tip of Lac d'Annecy in the Haute-Savoie region of France, cradled between the lake and the limestone peaks of the Bauges and Bornes massifs. The lake is fed entirely by underground springs and is consistently ranked among the cleanest in Europe — its water a luminous turquoise-green that shifts with the light and the season. The old town, built on a network of canals that earned Annecy its name as the Venice of the Alps, spills down to the lakefront in a tangle of medieval arcades, flower-draped bridges, and pastel-coloured facades.

The Palais de l'Isle — a 12th-century castle built on a triangular island in the middle of the Thiou canal — is one of the most photographed buildings in France. The Château d'Annecy rises above the old town on its rocky promontory, its towers visible from the lake. And beyond the rooftops, the Tournette massif and the Dents de Lanfon close the horizon to the east, their limestone walls reflected in the water below.
