The steepest groomed run in Austria. The Zillertal at its most dramatic.
Mayrhofen sits at the head of the Zillertal — the Ziller valley — in the Tyrol region of Austria, a compact and lively resort town surrounded by the peaks of the Zillertal Alps. The valley itself is one of the great ski valleys of the Eastern Alps, its four glacier ski areas — the Zillertal Arena — connected by lift and bus to form one of the largest ski regions in Austria. But Mayrhofen's own mountain, the Penken, is where the resort's reputation was made, and it was made on a single run.
The Harakiri is the steepest groomed piste in Austria — a 78% gradient that drops from the Filzenalm to the valley floor in a sustained wall of groomed snow that stops most skiers at the top and sends the rest down at speeds they did not plan for. It is not a long run. It does not need to be. The Harakiri has become one of the defining challenges of Austrian skiing, the run that serious skiers add to their list alongside the Streif at Kitzbühel and the Kandahar at Garmisch. And unlike those World Cup courses, the Harakiri is open to the public every day of the season.
This print captures Mayrhofen at its most dramatic — the Penken rising steeply above the valley town, the Zillertal stretching below, the Zillertal Alps on the horizon, the Austrian winter sky deep blue above. Bold, steep, and unmistakably Tyrolean.
