Sölden sits at the head of the Ötztal in the Tyrol region of Austria, its two glaciers — the Rettenbach and the Tiefenbach — rising above 3,000 metres in the Ötztal Alps. Every October, before the rest of the Alpine ski world has opened for the season, Sölden hosts the opening giant slalom races of the Alpine Ski World Cup on the Rettenbach glacier — the first competitive skiing of the season, the race that sets the tone for the winter ahead. The Sölden World Cup has been the traditional season opener since 1992, and the glacier race course, carved into the ice above 3,000 metres, is one of the most demanding on the circuit.
Sölden came to the attention of a wider global audience in 2015 when the James Bond film Spectre opened with a chase sequence filmed on the glaciers and in the mountains above the resort — the Ice Q restaurant, perched on the Gaislachkogl at 3,048 metres, appearing as the Hoffler Klinik in the film's opening act. The Ice Q has since become one of the most photographed buildings in the Alps, its glass cube form cantilevered over the glacier with the Ötztal Alps stretching to the horizon in every direction.
