Geneva sits at 375 metres on the southwestern tip of Lac Léman — Lake Geneva — where the Rhône flows out and Mont Blanc fills the horizon on a clear day. The Jet d’Eau — shooting 140 metres into the air — has been the city’s signature since 1891, visible from almost everywhere in the city and impossible to ignore. This is a place of grand institutions and quiet elegance: the flower clock on the Quai du Général-Guisan, the old town rising above the lake, St. Pierre Cathedral at its summit.

Not everyone’s Geneva memory is glamorous. We stopped here in 1994 on the way to Tignes for summer glacier skiing — campsite on the edge of the lake, seemed perfect. It was, until a disco boat started circling at midnight and didn’t stop until dawn. Geneva doesn’t care — it’s been doing its own thing since 1291.
