So this is an obscure pick I hear you say as you do a quick search to see where on earth this little gem is ... well, aged 14 & 15 I spent two Xmas breaks race training there & always longed to go back. Some amazing terrain and an especially long bump run not to mention the Götzner Abfahrt run back to the bus at the end of the day.  About 15 mins non-stop if you are gunning it and want to make sure to pick up some Milka before the shops close.  Or as we did ... a midnight descent on old-school wooden sledges in the dark after sampling some Austrian schnapps.

Axamer Lizum sits at 2,340 metres in the Stubai Alps, just 30 minutes from the Tyrolean capital — yet a world away from the city below. The resort hosted alpine ski events at both the 1964 and 1976 Innsbruck Winter Olympics, and the wide open bowls and reliable high-altitude snow that made it an Olympic venue still define the experience today. The funicular railway climbing through the pines to the upper mountain is one of the great arrivals in Alpine skiing — the moment the valley disappears and the peaks take over. Unpretentious, uncrowded, and genuinely Austrian.
